Summary
Since the mid-1990s, when the Chinese government released policies encouraging the growth and development of Chinese higher education institutions to drive economic growth and to better prepare students for the workforce, the university system has seen unprecedented growth. The percentage of all university-age students attending universities in China has risen from below 5 percent to almost 50 percent. China has more universities in the top 200 worldwide. However, some of the possible drawbacks of this rapid expansion are apparent; many students still need an equal opportunities or access to universities. This research project will investigate the effects of growth on the equality and quality of education at Chinese universities.
