Summary

Although there has been extensive research on the detrimental impacts of not maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm on physical wellbeing and academic excellence, many are unaware of the prevalence of such issues. Especially during an unprecedented time like this, it is important to prioritize our health and wellbeing. Through extensive data gathering, I was able to obtain results that show the drastic and unhealthy change in sleep health among local high schoolers during this time.

Personal Statement

Throughout this year, I centered my project around addressing misconceptions at Palo Alto High School concerning circadian rhythms, and looked at data from Paly students to compare with average numbers of the rest of the nation. However, with the sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus and the consequent shelter-in-place order, I immediately noticed a shift in sleep schedules of those around me, and believed that it was appropriate to alter my research so that it reflects the current situation and educates others.
