Summary

The promise of student government as a form of popular representation for student voices has long been lauded for its positive values. The supposed ideal of a system where the youth can participate in government-like functions within their own, with the hope of increasing broader civic participation. However, despite these otherwise apolitical values that student governance is built upon, elected students face pressure from both fellow representatives and activist organizations to pick a position on sometimes global issues. Various political causes aim to utilize student government as a tool for their own agenda, leading to friction between the non-partisan goals of a student government and the partisan issues that they find themselves immersed in (Goodman, 2022). With student government as a tool for civil participation, activism, and autonomy put under question, a concrete analysis of the models available and the horizons that lay ahead is necessary. What strategies do activists leverage in regards to student governance when promoting their own causes and engaging in student activism? And is it effective?
