Rebuilding the Fletcher Garden and Providing Environment-Focussed Curriculum

Action Research Project through Changemaker Project. We will start partner garden and environment clubs at Gunn and Fletcher. Club members will work to revive the school garden at Fletcher, and eventually lead environmental education for Fletcher students. This project will help young students feel connected to nature and empower them to fight climate change.

Educating Teens to Provide Support for Underaged Sexual Abuse Victims

Action Research Project through Changemaker Project. Many students who have experienced sexual violence do not receive any support because they do not want to report the crime and therapists, teachers, etc. are all mandated reporters. These victims might not be mentally prepared to report which leaves them with no one to speak to. In collaboration with qualified therapists, we will create a curated website in which students can anonymously share their story and create training materials to help peers better support those who have experienced sexual violence.

Investigating the Susceptibility to Misinformation Through Behavioral Factors

With the surge of social media usage in the past decade, misinformation has become increasingly prevalent, especially among the youth. In 2017, 31% of kids aged 10 to 18 have reshared at least one false news story on the misconception of its reliability. The spread of fake news is not a new problem nor an easy problem to solve; current fixes, including both AI and human filtering sources, have proven to be temporary and insufficient. In order to introduce a new perspective to current research, we plan to investigate the factors and behaviors that correlate with susceptibility to fake news through a survey. The survey will assess participants on their ability to identify fake news through headlines and collect data on their behaviors concerning general news.

How Does the Lack of Ethnic Diversity in Genome-Wide Association Studies Contribute to Inaccurate Risk Estimates of Genetic Risk for Minority Groups as Opposed to Populations of European Descent?

Despite the great level of diversity that exists globally, most genetic disease studies are based on populations of mainly European ancestry. 78% of genome-wide association studies come from populations of European descent when in reality, these groups only make up 16% of the global population. This has negatively impacted members of minority (or non-European) groups because studies taken from mainly European populations can cause inaccurate or incomplete translation of research into public health policies, which results in a disparity in the level of health care provided to minority groups who were not accurately researched. Databases will be used to analyze the effects of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome, because it disproportionately affects certain minority populations. These databases will include the GWAS catalog, which looks at the ethnic/racial makeups of various populations from GWAS studies, the Database of Genetic Variants, which provides information about specific genetic variants, and the CDC’s health statistics, which show the distribution of deaths from a particular condition based on race. Through this research, correlation and regression analysis will be utilized to see if there is a correlation between studies from mainly European populations and higher death rates from that particular condition for minority groups.

Vertical Farming in Homes

Food insecurity is a significant issue in the world today. Vertical farming is an extremely efficient and cost effective way to grow food and it takes up very little space. Vertical farms at home could be a possible solution or aid to the growing issue of food insecurity. This project uses experimentation by maintaining a vertical farm to analyze whether vertical farming could be a viable option to help combat food insecurity.

What Events Cause Changes in Partisanship in the US Congress?

In recent years, increasing political polarization has been the subject of much discussion. There are several ways to measure aspects of partisanship, including surveys of voter attitudes, the voting behavior of politicians, and measures of political speech based on new text-analytic, machine-learning techniques. This study examines the trends in these distinct measures and assesses the likely causes of changes in partisanship in the US Congress using econometric techniques such as interrupted time-series designs and structural-break analyses.

Imapct of New PMTA Regulation Policies on Tobacco Industry Marketing Strategies

PMTA Regulations serve as gateways. They authorize a tobacco product to be on the market, considering factors like advertising and marketing as a whole. In the wake of new PMTA Regulations, tobacco companies likely will change the way they advertise in order to be authorized. The goal of this study is to highlight those changes by comparing product advertising before and after this year’s PMTA Regulations. The study will highlight some themes of the study and hopefully consider why such changes happened.
