Effects of Stereotyping in Type Casting on the Careers of Racial Minority Actors

While films, television shows, and theatrical productions are popular sources of entertainment, audiences often do not realize what is happening behind the scenes. Racial discrimination in the workplace is something that society has been dealing with for generations. The Film and Theatre industries are no exception to this; historically, Asian and Asian American actors have been offered comparatively few roles and oftentimes these actors are cast only to portray certain stereotypes. The Theatre and Film industries are already highly competitive, but it presents the aspiring Asian and Asian American actors a much higher challenge to be a part of these industries due to the lack of roles for people coming from this background.

Determining the Best Post-Graduation Options for High School Students Using Self-Interest Inventories and Research

There is a problem with the perception of post-high school options despite the fact that many other nations encourage their students to “follow their own pathway,” which includes trade school. This problem negatively affects American high school students because the message is that “no child should be left behind” and thus every student should be ready to attend a 4-year college. However, this is not the case, nor is it the best option for every student. Therefore, a study of post-high school options is needed to provide students with alternatives to a 4-year college plan.

How has the involvement of Asian-Americans in the film industry evolved?

This research project investigates whether the presence of Asian-Americans on screen is evolving: whether the presence is increasing, or the roles are becoming more significant. As seen in older movies, Asian-American actors often played stereotypical roles or were portrayed in a negative light. By conducting extensive interviews, reading books and articles, and observing modern day movies and television, the results could potentially determine if the involvement of Asian-Americans actors in the film industry has evolved from its past or still needs change.

What variables affect literacy development among K-3 students?

Research shows that low-income students have historically been at a disadvantage for developing literacy skills in elementary school, which can have a negative impact on their future academic and career success. It can be inferred that the more students read, the more developed their literacy skills become. This study examines whether sending books home with second grade students in a structured way impacts the behavior that leads to literacy.

Compare the quality of Chinese and English translations of Japanese text through studying two notable pieces of Japanese literature and their translations.

This research project aims to identify and analyze the different or similar problems involved in translating literary Japanese text to Chinese and English. To do so, two notable pieces of Japanese literature – Izu no Odoriko (The Dancing Girl of Izu) by Yasunari Kawabata and Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami – are selected as the subjects of the research. Specific passages from both books will then be selected and compared between the original text and the available versions of translations based on factors such as accuracy and the preservation of style.

How has the role of African American females in television, movies, and plays evolved over time? What variables affected this evolution?

This project aims to answer these questions through analysis of historical text regarding the entertainment industry as well as primary sources such as films and episodes of television shows. Once television’s motivation to create black female characters is exposed, it may be used to influence the film industry’s treatment of black women.
