What is the feasibility of starting a housing venture in college residents in Portland? Connect these findings to why college housing opportunities aren't as prevalent in the Silicon Valley.

This project is investigating the feasibility of buying a house and renting it to college students in residential areas surrounding colleges and universities. Some college students report having a hard time finding housing near their campuses. One goal of the research project is to investigate housing trends and alternatives. Additionally, this project is analyzing housing data in areas near Reed College and Stanford University to determine the variables affecting students in off-campus housing.

How can companies strategically and tactically set the most optimized pricing structure for consumer products for both online stores and offline retail channels?

Pricing hugely influences a company’s profit. In fact, a 1% price decrease can results in 10-15% decrease in operating profit. The 4Ps (pricing, product, place, promotion) ultimately dictates a product life expectancy, brand image, competitive strength and market share. This research project is to establish a financial model, conduct market competitive research, research on price elasticity to find out volume sensitivity to prices and evaluate pricing coordination between online B2C (business to consumer through Amazon) price and offline B2B (business to business through Walmart Stores).

What are the variables that contribute to successful start-ups?

With large companies like Uber and Lyft that rely on taxi dispatch optimization, it is very important to find the optimal way to dispatch drivers to passengers while maximizing efficiency and revenue. This research project will entail conducting analysis to write a simple and cost-effective computer algorithms to put into a simulation by measuring which ones make the most revenue.

Learning to Publicize Global Citizenship and Cultural Sensitivity by Emily W.

Business

Summary

The term global citizenship often refers to a person who identifies their citizenship with the global community instead of one specific nation or country. A person who believes in global citizenship lives with the idea that the whole human race is one; that is interdependent and whole. When one lives in a country, they unconsciously soak up knowledge of the culture that they live in. In a sense, by simply living there, the person begins to “become one” with the country, its history, and its cultural customs. In a way, to truly be global citizen, one would have to be at least somewhat knowledgeable in the many different cultures from around the world. However, how does one fully immerse themselves in another country’s culture without spending a significant portion of time in said country? What about if one wants to learn about a culture from over a few hundred years ago? Stanford professor Patrick Hunt has come up with a solution to that problem. The product that he is developing includes both tours and lectures, allowing people to learn not only about current cultural trends, but also trends and history from many years ago...Cultural sensitivity has become a must for everyone around the world. Since the expansion of technology and the internet, it has become more important than ever for people from all parts of the world to learn more about the customs of other countries in order not to unintentionally offend someone. With Professor Patrick Hunt’s new product, people will get to take the first steps to becoming true global citizens in fun and educational ways...Research on how to brand Professor Patrick Hunt’s product will be conducted through the rest of the school year/for the duration of the AAR research period. The first few weeks (around one month) will be dedicated to researching the competition in this market that Professor Hunt’s product will be penetrating. This will include scouring the web for similar products offered by other companies, and how successful those products have been. The next few weeks after that will be dedicated to researching the target market and how successful the product could potentially be when introduced to the tourism market. The rest of the time will be spent figuring out how to brand and introduce the product to the market, such that it seems fun and educational, while also significantly different enough from competitors to create its own niche market.

Researching Accessbility of Academic Resources Outside of School Setting to Design An Application by Timothy L. & Ashley Z.

Business

Summary

How can students effectively utilize their time and resources to get the best possible academic aid and support in order to learn or review concepts outside of school? As Palo Alto is an area of high academic stress and competition, how can we best support students so that they are able to learn material taught in classes to the best of their abilities? We are looking to analyze availability of academic resources outside of school to create an application that utilizes a network of tutors to allow for better academic resources for students in need of help given location. The goal of the app is to have a widespread appeal to students of all grades so that when they need help, they can simply request a tutor and a tutor registered with the app as well will be able to answer the call. Tutors will be paid/rewarded by commission and based on success of the session, which the tutee will evaluate....In Silicon Valley, academic pressure is something that every single student is all too used to.  Students often complain about the vast difficulties they face in different subjects, but the stigma around actually going to get help causes many to stress unnecessarily over assignments that they can easily get help on.  The fallacy in the technological savvy of Silicon Valley is that many students do not utilize their vast resources well; instead of calling up a friend to get help on homework or study for a test, kids flock to social media sites like Twitter to complain about academic issues.  Thus, there is a clear need for a product that can combine the technological excellence of the region with an easy and efficient way to get academic help when needed in order to reduce stress and minimize the overall stereotype of the “Palo Alto Teen” stress case....We are proposing to do data analysis in order to design a mobile application that allows students to contact tutors in any subject at any given moment at any available location in the area...

Market Viability Analysis of an Online Course Geared Towards Refining High School Students' “Interest Portfolios” by Samarth V.

Business

Summary

Every year, hundreds of thousands of high school children go through the labor-intensive college application process that involves showcasing their passions and interests. Students typically spend, in aggregate, hundreds of hours on activities outside of their academic curriculum in order to pursue hobbies and passion projects. These encompass sports activities in or out of school, volunteer work that spans a variety of contexts and settings, participation in academic clubs and contests, debate and forensics, drama and theater, internships in industry settings, research activities in laboratories and elsewhere, and pursuing personal hobbies such as art & crafts, woodworking, programming, do-it-yourself making, playing a musical instrument or singing, among several others. When it comes time to “package” one’s personal story for the college application process, students are often at a loss as to how to share this information in a coherent way.  What if an out-of-school educational organization were to create a course offering that would help students bring credibility and refinement to their “interest portfolios”? This research project aims to assess the viability of such course offering, who the target student audience would be to market such a course to, and how such a course should be designed. This research analyzes data from The School of The New York Times, that was recently launched and includes a pre-collegiate program that includes offerings "to present a new kind of classroom where students can develop their skills and build their futures" (nyedu.org). Currently their offerings include weekend courses where students meet thought leaders and learn about topics they don't typically encounter as part of high school curricula, a summer academy in New York City, and single-day or multi-day symposia that involve discussions about big ideas and innovations shaping the world and also other topics that encompass conversations about pertinent to students' futures such as college admissions and preparation, and career opportunities. This research will entail designing surveys to gauge student interest in such an offering. Data will be gathered from surveying roughly 400 high school students across two geographical regions of the country - the San Francisco Bay Area and the New York tri-state region. Data will be analyzed to answer the research questions around determining the characteristics of the target population for such a course. A preliminary model for such a course will be “field-tested” with potential instructors, mentors, college counselors, college admissions officers, supervisors of high school interns. The final outcome of the project will be a report that shares data from student surveys and reactions to a preliminary course design from various stakeholders.

Investigating Ways to Effectively Diagnose, Create a Business Plan, and Promote C Magazine by Clara & Sammy

Business

Summary

Our project is to systematically investigate several business models to effectively diagnose, create a business plan in order to  promote C Magazine and have Palo Alto High School's student run publication C Magazine. Through this process we hope to identify ways to create a website, raise funds, increase readership, and more for C Magazine. This project will also involve learning the process that real world business go through in order to determine the best course of action to promote and fund their businesses through social media, the internet, and other mediums...

Economical Analysis of Growth in Greenn Industry by Nicholas T.

Business

Summary

In history, the most money has been typically made by those who capitalize and dominate the fledgling industry. Rockefeller became the richest man in history with his early domination of the early market. At his side are the infamous super capitalist who pounced on new industries to mine untold profits from markets that had not existed five years prior. Carnegie and his steel, Jobs with his personal computer, Zuckerberg and his social network. It follows similar patterns of rapid growth on untapped markets...As part of my research project, I will be analyzing the companies vying for control of this green industry, under the lens of future growth for the industry. This project will not consider the following aspect as part of variables: the morality, legality, or social implications that legalization will bring. Instead, it will focus on the economic side. I want to take more of an investor's slant on the situation looking for companies that will be the next Budweiser or General Mills of Marijuana...To gain a better understanding of the climate, I am going to start the data collection by interviewing a family friend who runs one of the most successful florist companies on the west coast and who is considering entering the growing industry. I also plan on communicating directly with some the pre-established companies in the Colorado area to gain what knowledge they have on future of the industry. My next best lead would be my old soccer coach, Bill Barnett. He currently works as a professor of business at Stanford and is also interested in how very powerful companies form...
